I don’t think many people would see Tommy as menacing. I only met him a few times in real life but that’s about the last word I’d use to describe him offstage. Onstage, however, the intensity I always saw him put into it could definitely come across as menacing. The same is true of any artist that throws everything they have into a performance. I don’t think the “somewhat menacing” statement describes anyones opinion of Tommy as a person, and instead reflects in a positive way the intensity he put into the music.
